29 The Betrayal

The week had passed slowly for Hunt and McCormack, who had spent most of their time banged up in the SCU offices in the basement of Scotland Yard. Both of their initial investigations had ground to a halt and now they had diverted their attention to two new cases. The first involved the contract killing of a man known as Burger Bill, the operator of many unlicensed fast food vans in the South East. The vans were operated by people who were claiming benefits or were asylum seekers and could therefore be blackmailed into working for a pittance. On the odd occasion that one of these employees became a liability they would be dealt with harshly. In the case of asylum seekers they usually ‘disappeared’. It seemed that there were plenty of people queuing up to kill Burger Bill, but Hunt had decided that this was not the work of a disgruntled employee but a professional hit by another gang with the same business interests. The second case was only slightly more interesting and the two DCs were seriously unsure that transferring to the SCU had been a prudent decision.

‘God I’m bored,’ McCormack said, sat at his desk, his head in his hands.

‘Let’s have nice cuppa?’ Hunt replied.

‘That’s your answer to all of life’s woes, let’s have a nice cuppa!’ McCormack whined.

‘Carry on like that and you can have Burger Bill’s case back.’

‘Sorry mate, I know it’s not your fault but don’t you feel isolated in this unit. We don’t quite fit in anywhere.’

‘I’m more worried about the lack of overtime. My wife’s threatening to run off with our travel agent if I don’t book some sort of holiday soon,’ Hunt said, searching his drawers for an elusive paper clip.

‘I’ve been offered a job with the SOCA,’ McCormack said, frowning and engaging eye contact with Hunt.

‘What… You’ve only been here five minutes.’

‘I know… But I was interviewed for it a while back and then they put it on hold. They’ve just told me it’s all systems go now. Seeing as I’m not sure this is the job I thought it was going to be well, I’m having second thoughts.’

‘Speak to the boss then. We’re only just getting started and I’m sure she’ll sort you out,’ Hunt reassured, giving up the search for a paper clip and using a stapler instead.

‘I already have and she didn’t.’

Hunt’s laptop beeped, advising him that a new email had arrived and, distracted, he swivelled in his chair to look at the screen.

‘That’ll be what that’s all about then. Email from the boss, she’s holding a team briefing after lunch,’ Hunt said, opening the email and paraphrasing its contents.

‘Let’s get out of here for a while; get some lunch or a beer before this meeting,’ McCormack said, standing up and putting his coat on.

Waiting on a bench opposite the coffee hut in Hyde Park, Michael White watched the passing young couple intently. Hidden around the park was a team of ex-SAS soldiers - twelve in all - connected by discreet two-way radio earpieces.
